INTRO

Seven European calendars already keep a day for Adam

Adam has another day on the calendar, and National Adam Day is not it. On the name-day calendars of Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Slovakia, Adam's day is December 24, Christmas Eve. Sweden marks it a day earlier.

That date carries its own record. Medieval Christians used December 24 to recall the Genesis story of Adam and Eve's fall, in preparation for the Christmas feast. They staged paradise plays around an evergreen hung with apples, and some believe that paradise tree became the Christmas tree.

November 8 has no such record behind it. None of the name-day dates on that list falls in November, and the earliest traceable sign of the day is an archived listing from August 2022.

Adam Day history

INTRODUCTION

For most of the twentieth century the name of the first man was an unusual thing to call an American boy. In 1948 just 240 newborns were given it. That put Adam 430th among American boys' names, the lowest it has ever ranked in the federal record.

Thirty-six years later it stood 18th. Nothing in the record explains the turn, but the annual counts date it exactly.

CHAPTER 01

What Adam actually means

Adam is the Hebrew word for man. Behind the Name says it may go back to a Hebrew root meaning to be red, after the ruddy colour of human skin, or to the Akkadian adamu, to make.

The familiar earth connection sits to one side of that. It appears in the Genesis account as a word play on adama, earth, and is not among the derivations Behind the Name proposes. The name has been common in English since the Middle Ages, and it gained ground after the Protestant Reformation.

CHAPTER 02

From 430th to 18th

The American turn begins abruptly. 582 boys were named Adam in 1959, and 1,018 the following year. By 1962 the count was 2,149.

Adam entered the American top 100 in 1970, at 72nd. That was ninety years after the record begins.

It peaked in 1984, when 23,939 boys were given the name. Across the whole decade the agency counted 195,086 Adams, 22nd among boys' names for the 1980s.

CHAPTER 03

A day with no author

National Adam Day has nothing like that behind it. Its origin is undocumented, and no founding record of any kind was located. Of five holiday-listing registries checked against the Internet Archive, only one has ever carried a page for the day.

That listing was first captured on 14 August 2022. Three different origin years circulate online, 2008, 2017 and 2018, and none of them cites anything.

Only 240 boys were given the name, putting it 430th, its weakest position in the whole record.

A count of 4,313 boys lifted the name to 72nd, its first appearance in the top 100.

The American peak

23,939 boys were named Adam, the highest annual count on record, at 18th place.

Why National Adam Day Matters

CALENDAR

Named for the saint whose day you were baptized on.

Britannica records that saints came to dominate the church calendar, which names a recognized saint for each day of the year, and that in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches a Christian generally took the name of the saint on whose day he was baptized. The resulting name day, as the day of rebirth, is of much greater significance than the natural birthday.

580,378 boys have been named Adam in the United States since the federal record opened in 1880. The name appears in every one of the 146 annual files, with no year missing.

STANDING

The American top-100 run has ended

Adam held a place in the American top 100 every year from 1970 to 2020. Since then it has returned only twice, at 99th in 2022 and 100th in 2024.
