Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and her father who raised six children alone, petitioned the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and YMCA for a day honoring fathers. They endorsed it, setting June 19, 1910 as the first observance with city-wide sermons, roses, and gifts.
