Festival Inception

The first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Live, debuting on October 9–10 with Beck, Rage Against the Machine, and Tool as the headliners.

Return of the Festival

After a hiatus in 2000 due to financial losses, the festival returned on an annual basis in April, with Jane's Addiction and Fatboy Slim headlining.

Event Expansion

The festival expanded to a three-day event with attendance reaching 100,000 per day and performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Björk, and Arcade Fire.

Two Weekends Format

Coachella expanded into a two-weekend format, due to growing popularity, replicating the same lineup on two consecutive weekends.
