Establishment of the Nuremberg tribunals

The Nuremberg trials held after World War II marked the start of an international commitment to bring war criminals to justice.

Adoption of the Genocide Convention

The United Nations finalized and later started enforcing the Genocide Convention, which promises to prevent and punish acts of genocide.

Creation of the Iran Tribunal

The Iran Tribunal was created to hold hearings for those accused of human rights violations during the late 20th century in Iran.

UN's Yugoslav and Rwanda Tribunals

The United Nations established the International Criminal Tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda, further developing international criminal law.

Formation of the International Criminal Court

The Rome Statute was adopted, establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC) and later coming into force in 2002.

Inauguration of World Day for International Justice
