A Martyr's Legacy
Tradition holds that Paul appointed Timothy as the first bishop of Ephesus around AD 64. According to early church historians, Timothy served in that role for roughly three decades before being killed around AD 97. He was reportedly stoned by a mob after confronting worshipers during a festival for the goddess Diana, making him one of the early church's documented martyrs.
The name remained in use within Christian communities for centuries, though it stayed largely confined to clerical and scholarly circles until the 1500s.
