One name fell to rank 472 and came back to three

National Oliver Day lands on a name with an unusual record behind it. Twelve American boys' names were inside the Social Security Administration's top 100 at some point in the 1880s. Each one lost ground, then climbed back into the top ten.

Oliver fell the furthest of the twelve. Its low point came in 1986. That year it ranked 472nd among American boys, while the next-deepest of them stopped at 370.

The day itself explains none of that. No founder is on record for National Oliver Day, and no establishing document has surfaced. The record underneath the name is the part that is well kept.

Oliver Day history

INTRODUCTION

The name reaches England long before England kept birth records, and where it came from before that is still an open question. The Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources puts its earliest English citations in the 1180s, as the clerks' Latin Oliuerus and Oliueri. Two reference works have examined the origin and neither will settle on an answer.

CHAPTER 01

Three roots and no verdict

That dictionary calls Oliver a name of uncertain origin. It offers three possible routes, and only one of them is the Latin oliva, the olive tree. Behind the Name arrives at the same three and hedges the olive route as merely possible.

The other two candidates are not botanical at all. Alvaro is built from Germanic elements meaning all and guard. Olaf comes from Norse elements meaning ancestor and remainder.

CHAPTER 02

The Lord Protector's long shadow

Oliver was a common medieval name in England. Behind the Name records that it became rare after the seventeenth century because of the soldier and politician Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was born at Huntingdon in April 1599 and ruled the country after the civil war.

The recovery came in the 1800s. Charles Dickens published Oliver Twist in monthly instalments in Bentley's Miscellany from February 1837. Behind the Name credits the nineteenth-century revival to the book only in part, and only perhaps.

CHAPTER 03

A century outside the American top hundred

American record-keeping picks the name up in a weaker state. Oliver dropped out of the country's top 100 boys' names early in the last century. It stayed outside that bracket for 105 consecutive years.

The climb back was slower than the finish suggests. Oliver's worst year on the American list was 1986, long after most of that absence had already passed. From 1996 onward the rank never once got worse than the year before.

CHAPTER 04

A day nobody signed

The observance is the thinnest part of the record. No founder, sponsor or establishing document for National Oliver Day has been identified, and a full-text search of the Federal Register finds nothing under the name in any document indexed since 1994. That leaves the name itself carrying the day.

Oliver's weakest showing lands in a different year on each measure: fewest boys in 1899 and smallest share in 1962, both before the rank bottomed out. Any claim about when a name hit its low is really a claim about which of those measures someone picked.

Lionel Bart's Oliver! opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on 6 January 1963 and ran 774 performances. From that year to 1986 the name's American rank stayed between 375 and 472, finishing at its worst position in the series.

It is in every single annual file

Oliver appears on the boys' list in all 146 of the Social Security Administration's annual files from 1880 to 2025. Even at its lowest it never fell out of the top 1000, so no year of the series is missing it.

The name above it did most of the work

Between 2018 and 2019 Oliver gained 467 births, moving from 13,500 to 13,967. William, the name it passed, lost 988 in the same two years, so Oliver's own rise accounts for under a third of the swing between them.

On the girls' list it keeps vanishing

Oliver is listed as a girls' name in only 77 of those 146 years, with counts running from 5 to 28, and thirteen of those years sit at exactly five births. Five is the privacy floor, so in the 69 missing years the true count is somewhere between zero and four rather than nothing.
