The older Luke day belongs to October.

National Luke Day is kept on November 5 for people named Luke. Its beginnings did not survive: the Luke observance that carries a documented record is St Luke's Day on 18 October, a separate day in a separate month for the evangelist rather than the name.

How much of Luke's rise really belongs to Star Wars

National Luke Day comes with an origin story most people assume they already know. Star Wars opened in the spring of 1977, its hero was called Luke Skywalker, and the name took off. The federal record of American baby names tells a stranger version.

Luke's biggest year in American history is not in the 1970s at all. It is 2014. That year, parents in the United States gave the name to 10,523 boys.

More boys were named Luke in that single year than in the four years following the film's release, combined. Those four years produced 8,703 between them. The Star Wars era turns out to be a step on the way up, not the summit.

Luke Day history

INTRODUCTION

The Luke behind the name was a doctor. He travelled with the apostle Paul, and the letter to the Colossians calls him the beloved physician. The Vatican still heads its own page on him with that job, describing a physician who wrote the Gospel for pagans.

What the name itself means is less settled. Behind the Name traces Luke through the Latin Lucas back to the Greek Loukas, probably a shortened Loukanos, meaning from Lucania. Lucania is a region of southern Italy, which makes the likeliest reading a place rather than a virtue.

A saint's day, then an English name

The saint's renown carried the name across the Christian world, and it has been in use as an English name since the 1100s. His feast settled on 18 October, where the Roman and Orthodox calendars both still keep it. He is patron of painters and sculptors and, because of the day job, of physicians and surgeons.

CHAPTER 02

What the birth records show

The Social Security Administration's national name data begins in 1880, and Luke sits in it from the opening year. It stayed a modest, steady name for the better part of a century. Then it climbed hard for four straight years, starting with the year the film opened.

Behind the Name is notably careful about why. It lists Luke Skywalker only as a famous fictional bearer, and dates the rise of both Luke and Lucas, in a separate sentence, to the end of the 20th century. The records reward that caution, because the variant Lucas climbed beside Luke through the whole surge.

The climb did not stop with the film era. The high set in 1980 stood for twelve years before another year beat it. The name then kept rising for two more decades.

This is the one question the record does not answer. The Luke observance with a paper trail is the October feast, and it has been kept for centuries. National Luke Day is a separate and much more recent thing, and its beginnings did not survive.

Leia moved far harder than Luke did

Leia had never once passed 35 girls in a year across the 97 years to 1976. It went from 21 in 1976 to 98 in 1977 and 156 in 1978.

The variant Lucas made its biggest jump first

Lucas rose 57.5 percent in 1975, its sharpest single year, and briefly overtook Luke. That is two years before Star Wars opened.

Three names outgrew Luke in the same window

Among the 344 boys' names with at least 500 births in 1976, Luke's growth to 1980 ranked only fourth. Shaun rose 6.3-fold and Nicholas 6.1-fold, against Luke's 3.4.

His is the longest of the four Gospels

The Vatican's own account of the saint calls the third Gospel, the one bearing Luke's name, the longest. He is credited with the Acts of the Apostles as well.

Luke has never dropped out of the top 1,000

Across all 146 years of American records, from 1880 to 2025, the name has never once fallen out of the top 1,000 for boys. Its lowest ebb was 110 boys in 1942.

American records account for 323,020 boys named Luke since 1880, and seven in ten of them were born in 2000 or later. The four years after the film's release supply under three percent of the total.

On 5 November 2025, Bristol Live, the Newcastle Chronicle and the Mirror all posted to mark the day, within about seven hours of each other. That is what the day's public footprint looks like: news titles marking it, rather than an organiser promoting it.
