An old name on a date nobody can account for.

No documented founder or formal establishment record has been identified for National Karl Day. The earliest traceable circulation is a third-party holiday listing captured by the Internet Archive on 19 July 2022, which names no founder and gives no first observance; two other listing registries, checked against their own URL conventions, carry no page for the day at all.

Denmark's number two boys' name is two names in one

Denmark named 514 newborn boys Karl in 2025, enough for second place on Statistics Denmark's list. National Karl Day has no hand in that ranking. The spelling Karl does not fully own it either.

The catch is printed on the same page as the list. Statistics Denmark's Top 50 adds up alternative spellings and files them under whichever is used most. The agency's own worked example is Karl and Carl.

Ask its name search for each spelling on its own and the ranking comes apart. Karl went to 262 Danish boys last year. Carl went to 252.

INTRODUCTION

Long before any calendar carried a National Karl Day, the name already had a fixed place in the year. Across Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia it sits on 28 January.

The date is not an accident, and it is not what most people assume. The obvious guess is the Swedish throne, which has carried the name many times over. Isof, the Swedish government's institute for language and folklore, rules that out in a sentence.

CHAPTER 01

Why the almanac chose deep winter

None of the kings put Karl in the Swedish name list, Isof says. The day marks the death of Charlemagne, who ruled the Frankish realm from 768 until 814.

He died at Aachen, and Britannica dates it to 28 January of that year. An emperor's death date, not a Swedish reign, is what fixed the name to late January.

CHAPTER 02

The other Karl day

German-speaking Europe keeps a different date. Behind the Name lists 4 November as the name's day in Germany, and as one of five dates in Austria. So a reader looking for Karl's place on the calendar finds two answers before ever reaching July.

CHAPTER 03

The Swedish century

In Sweden the name was not merely on the calendar. Isof, citing Statistics Sweden, says Karl was the single most common man's name in the country from the late 1800s until 1925.

It has not vanished since. The same institute puts it seventh in 2019.

The day with no author

National Karl Day has none of that record behind it. No founder, proclamation or launch announcement for it has been found.

The earliest trace is thin and datable. The Internet Archive's oldest capture of any third-party listing for the day was made on 19 July 2022, and that listing names no founder and gives no first observance.

Two other listing registries, checked first against their own URL conventions, carry no page for it at all. What the record shows is a date in circulation, not a day that someone started.

Sweden's flag-day regulation makes 28 January a general flag day, listing it as King Carl XVI Gustaf's name day. The July date carries nothing comparable, and a search of the United States Federal Register returns no document at all under the name National Karl Day.

FOLKLORE

The day once told Swedish farmers what winter would do

In parts of Sweden, above all in the north, Karl's day was taken for the coldest day of the whole winter half year. Isof notes that this may have had to do with the name resembling kall, the Swedish word for cold, which turned Karldagen into kalldagen.

CONTINUITY

An unbroken run in American records since 1880

Karl appears in every one of the 146 annual United States name files, from 1880 through 2025, without a single gap. It has not been inside the American top 1000 since 2009.
