What surrounds it is myth, not record.

National Eva Day appears on holiday-listing sites and circulates socially on 25 December, and what has grown around it is circulating misinformation from two directions rather than a record. No founder, founding year or establishing act is documented, and an exact-phrase search of the US Federal Register returns nothing naming it.

INTRO

Ask when Eva peaked and get three answers

National Eva Day marks a name with three different peak years, and the federal record will not choose between them. Rank Eva against every other American girls' name and its best showing is 1889. Measure its share of all girls born and the high point moves back to 1886.

Count plain births and the answer moves again, to 1918. The files record 4,563 American girls named Eva that year, more than in any other year on record. Same data, same window, three answers.

None of the three is wrong. They answer three different questions of the same files, and the answers sit decades apart. Every superlative about this name needs its basis attached before it means anything.

Eva Day history

INTRODUCTION

The name begins at one verse. At Genesis 3:20 the man in the story names his wife hawwah, and the sentence explains itself as it goes: she was the mother of all the living, hai. The naming is done by the man rather than by God, and the translation's own footnotes point at the two words the verse plays on.

CHAPTER 01

Two answers in one Bible

The Greek translators reached that verse and did not spell the name out. Swete's Septuagint prints Zoe at Genesis 3:20, the ordinary Greek word for Life. The name is translated at the exact moment it is given.

Four verses later they changed course. At Genesis 4:1 the same text reads Eua, a plain transliteration of the Hebrew. Both forms sit in the same book, a few lines apart.

CHAPTER 02

A northern calendar fixes the date

Centuries later a calendar pinned the name to a square. In Finland's almanac Adam and Eva share a single name day on December 24, because the tradition behind it holds that the two were made on the same day. It falls on the eve of Christmas because the pair stand for the fallen human race that Jesus redeems.

The paper trail there is old and datable. The Finnish-language almanac began publishing in 1705, and Adam and Eva were named in it the following year. The Finnicised Aatami and Eeva only arrived later.

CHAPTER 03

An American record, and a day with nothing behind it

The American story starts much later. The Social Security Administration's name files open in 1880, with Eva already near the top of them. Then it fell away, out of the top hundred after 1934, and stayed out for seventy-four years.

It returned in 2009 and did not settle. The name held a top-hundred place through 2021 and has been outside it since. In the most recent file it sits at 134th.

The day pinned to all of this has none of that documentation. No founder, no year and no establishing act can be found for National Eva Day. An exact-phrase search of the Federal Register returns nothing for it.

The Finnish-language almanac, then a year old, named Adam and Eva for the first time; the Finnicised Aatami and Eeva arrived later.

A novel gives Eva a chapter

Chapter XIV of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is titled "Evangeline", after a child who tells Tom that papa and everybody else call her Eva.

The last top-hundred year for decades

Eva ranked 100th among American girls' names, then dropped out of that bracket and stayed out for seventy-four years.

Eva falls past the top 200

The name came in 206th, the first year it had ever ranked outside the top two hundred American girls' names.

The biggest one-year rise on record

American births recorded as Eva went from 1,729 to 2,475, the largest single-year jump in the whole series by both count and percentage.

Back inside the American top hundred

Eva ranked 99th on 3,395 births, its first year inside the top hundred since the 1930s.

Since 1880 the files count 284,761 named Eva and 29,510 named Eve.

American birth records keep Eva and Eve as separate entries, and the totals are nowhere near each other: 284,761 girls named Eva since 1880 against 29,510 named Eve. Eva has outnumbered Eve in every one of those years, so folding the two spellings together erases a gap the data has never once closed.

STATUS

The date is already a federal holiday

Offices across the United States close on December 25, but for Christmas Day, which is a federal holiday. This observance is not one, and the closure has nothing to do with it.

LONGEVITY

An unbroken run through 146 annual files

Eva appears in every one of the 146 annual name files the Social Security Administration has published since 1880. That unbroken run is what makes the name's rises and falls measurable at all.

Eva has been given to American boys too

The name turns up in the Social Security Administration's male files in 99 of 146 years. Its biggest male year is 1933, with 25 births, and it is missing from the 2025 male file altogether.

Noel got December 23 because Eva had the 24th

The University of Helsinki's almanac notes that Christmas Day, in its words, lacks a name, and the square before it was already spoken for. So when Noel was added to the calendar, it was given the 23rd.

Five other spellings keep their own files

Ava's running American total since 1880 passed Eva's for the first time in 2019, and it has stayed ahead, reaching 344,097 by 2025. Chava, Evita, Hava and Ewa each hold their own smaller entries, at 3,552, 1,247, 325 and 296.

Four years in the record have no quotable rank

Tied names can be numbered two different ways, and for Eva the two methods disagree in 1906, 1987, 1994 and 1999. Every rank on this page comes from a year where the two agree.

The name's low point in the record is 1997

Eva came in 361st among American girls' names that year, its worst placing in the whole series, on both tie conventions.
