Why gloves are optional and the goalkeeper is not

The company that invented International Goalkeeper Day sells goalkeeper gloves. Football's rulebook does not require a goalkeeper to wear a pair. If a referee spots bare hands in goal, the guidance from the game's lawmakers is that no action is needed, because gloves are listed as optional equipment for every player on the pitch.

What the Laws do insist on is the goalkeeper. A team can line up in almost any shape it likes, but Law 3 states that one of the eleven must be the goalkeeper. It is the only position the rulebook names as compulsory.

That gap, between the equipment nobody demands and the role nobody can drop, is roughly where this day sits. It began as a memorial to one man. It has lasted because the position underneath it kept being argued over.

INTRODUCTION

For most of football's history, the goalkeeper's hands were a safe harbour. A defender under pressure could roll the ball back, and the keeper could simply pick it up and stand there. That habit hardened into a method for killing off matches.

The lawmakers moved after Italia '90, a tournament remembered for cynical, goal-shy football. The International Football Association Board rewrote Law 12 so that a goalkeeper could no longer handle a deliberate pass from a team-mate's boot. It took effect immediately after Euro 1992.

CHAPTER 01

The last easy pass

The old world got a send-off in the Euro 1992 final. With the match running down, the German defender Stefan Reuter slid the ball back to Bodo Illgner, who gathered it up in his hands. It was the last legally handled back-pass in a major tournament.

What followed was years of retraining. Goalkeepers who could not play with their feet drifted out of the game. The ones who could started attacks instead of ending them.

CHAPTER 02

The keeper from Ginebra

Miguel Ángel Calero came up inside that change. He was born in Ginebra, in Colombia's Valle del Cauca, in 1971. The date was 14 April.

He came through Deportivo Cali's youth ranks and won the first title of his career there in 1996. He was Colombia's goalkeeper when they took the Copa América at home in 2001. He did not concede in the final against Mexico.

Mexico then kept him for good; he made 477 appearances for Pachuca. The last of them, in October 2011, was also his retirement. He died in December 2012, a little over a year after walking off the pitch for the last time.

CHAPTER 03

A day for everything except the goalkeeper

Calero's gloves came from Rinat, a Mexican brand whose president, Héctor Castro, had supplied him for years. Castro wanted to mark him somehow. His reasoning was blunt: there was a day for the postman, for mothers, for fathers, for children, a day for everything except the goalkeeper.

The idea was not welcomed everywhere. Castro says he took it to goalkeepers around the world and ran straight into national pride. Spaniards asked why the goalkeeper's day should belong to a Colombian and offered Zamora's birthday instead, while Argentines pushed for Hugo Orlando Gatti's.

He went ahead regardless. Rinat pushed the first International Goalkeeper Day out across social media in 2013, on what would have been Calero's birthday.

Eight seconds with the ball, then the other team gets a corner.

A goalkeeper who controls the ball with their hands for more than eight seconds now hands the opposition a corner kick. The referee counts the final seconds down in the air, so the whole ground can watch the clock run out on them.

The new law claimed a victim inside an hour

The 1992 Olympics were football's first official outing under the back-pass rule. Italy's Francesco Antonioli handled the ball before the hour was up, and Joe-Max Moore of the United States scored the indirect free kick that followed.

Only one goalkeeper has ever won the Ballon d'Or

Lev Yashin took the award in 1963 and no keeper has won it since. France Football eventually gave goalkeepers a prize of their own, the Yachine Trophy, announced in September 2019.

If the substitutes run out, someone else takes the gloves

An outfield player can be sent into goal in the middle of a match. If the keeper is hurt once every substitution has been used, one of the players already on the pitch has to take over and change into a shirt that distinguishes them from everyone else.

Flicking the ball up with a knee is illegal too

The Laws close the obvious loophole in the back-pass rule. Deliberately using the head, chest or knee to get the ball into the goalkeeper's hands is an indirect free kick, and the keeper is punished if they started the trick.

The handling privilege stops at the penalty area line

Outside their own penalty area, a goalkeeper works under exactly the same handling restrictions as anybody else on the pitch. Inside it, an illegal touch costs an indirect free kick but carries no card.

A forward misses five chances, scores at the end of the match and he is a hero. A goalkeeper makes five or six great saves, makes one mistake in the last minutes and he is a villain. That is the difference.
