HOW THE HOLIDAY CAME TO BE

US Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970, inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and anti-war teach-ins. He proposed nationwide environmental teach-ins on college campuses to raise public awareness, and the first observance on April 22, 1970 drew 20 million Americans in a grassroots effort coordinated by Denis Hayes.
