INTRO

A decade when the name refused to pick a side

For eleven years running, guessing whether a baby Peyton was a girl or a boy was close to a coin toss. From 1997 through 2007, girls stayed between 45 and 55 percent of every year's American Peytons. In 1998 the federal birth records counted 1,417 girls against 1,451 boys.

That balance is harder to hold than it sounds. In 146 years of national data, only two names have ever held it longer than Peyton did. Devyn managed 16 years and Charlie 13.

National Peyton Day now covers everyone the name landed on. It was a boys' name from the 1880s, a girls' name only from the 1990s, and for one long stretch in between it was genuinely both.

ORIGINS

Peyton Day history

INTRODUCTION

On a Monday morning in September 1774, delegates met at a Philadelphia tavern at ten o'clock and walked to Carpenter's Hall. Their first order of business was choosing someone to preside. The man they picked was named Peyton.

That is how the name entered the American record, carried by Peyton Randolph, a delegate from Virginia. He signed the Congress's documents "Peyton Randolph, President." That October, unable to attend on account of indisposition, he gave up the chair to Henry Middleton.

CHAPTER 01

A village, then a family, then a person

Peyton did not begin as a name for people at all. It began as an English place, Pæga's town, built from an Old English personal name and the word for a farmstead. Families took the place name, and centuries later parents took the family name.

The United States started counting in 1880, and Peyton first appears four years later, carried by five boys. It reached the national top 1000 for boys in 1887 and held on in a scattering of years to 1898. Then it fell out, and stayed out for ninety years.

CHAPTER 02

The year the numbers moved

Peyton came back to the boys' top 1000 in 1989. Three years later something much stranger happened on the other side of the ledger. The number of American girls given the name went from 67 in 1991 to 398 in 1992.

Single year jumps like that are usually an illusion produced by a growing population. This one was not, because recorded births actually fell. Of the 2,518 girls' names with at least 50 births in 1991, only six tripled the next year.

Behind the Name, citing the onomastician Cleveland Kent Evans, ties the rise to the 1992 film The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which gave a female character the name. The same entry notes the awkward part. The character was the villain.

CHAPTER 03

A day nobody has claimed

The observance has no such paper trail. No person, company or organisation has ever been identified as its author, and it appears in no edition of Chase's Calendar of Events, the standard reference for observances.

The name is documented for centuries. The day for it is documented for none of them.
