Nancy Drew arrived late: the name was already climbing

National Nancy Day comes with a tidy explanation attached, and it involves a teenage detective. The first Nancy Drew mystery was published in 1930, right as American parents were choosing the name in fast-growing numbers. The birth records do not cooperate.

Nancy's share of American girls' births had been climbing gently through the early 1920s. In 1928 that growth broke out of the range it had held all decade. The next year it jumped another 28.2 percent, and the first book still did not exist.

Whatever started the climb, it was not the detective. The books arrived into a fashion already running, and then rode it.

The name has been recorded in American birth data every year since 1880, always under the exact spelling Nancy and always counted as female. That record shows a steep climb, two decades near the top, and then a collapse that has not quite finished.

Nancy Day history

INTRODUCTION

Nancy spent its first few centuries as somebody else's nickname. Behind the Name files it under Annis, the medieval English form of Agnes, where Nancy sits among the diminutives rather than standing on its own.

So the question the record answers is how a pet form ended up on more than a million American birth certificates, and then very nearly left them again.

CHAPTER 01

From Annis to a name of its own

The promotion happened in stages, not at once. Behind the Name, citing the Oxford Dictionary of First Names, records Nancy as a medieval diminutive of Annis that attached instead to Ann from the 18th century. Only afterwards did the reference books stop treating it as a shortening, and it is now usually regarded as an independent name.

CHAPTER 02

The ghostwriter behind Carolyn Keene

In 1930 the Stratemeyer Syndicate published The Secret of the Old Clock with Grosset & Dunlap. The title page credited Carolyn Keene, who was not a person.

Behind that invented byline was Mildred Wirt Benson. Her contract paid a flat fee, and required her to surrender every right to the work and to keep up the fiction that one woman wrote them all.

The original series ran to 30 titles. Benson wrote or contributed to 23 of them. Harriet Adams rewrote the first book in 1959.

CHAPTER 03

A day that arrives unsigned

National Nancy Day has no comparable paper trail. There is no proclamation behind it, no registration record, no trademark filing, and no organisation that claims to have started it.

What it has instead is practice. A snack company has run a National Nancy Day post honouring its own founder and pushed the hashtag, which is roughly how a day like this survives: kept by the people it names, rather than authorised by anyone.
