INTRO

Scottish Gaelic spelled John as Eoin for centuries

For centuries, Scottish Gaelic wrote the name John as Eoin. The name behind National Ian Day is a much later arrival. Josh Mittleman's study of the name for the Problem Names Project finds no example of the Gaelic Iain before the 19th century.

It dates the spelling Ian itself, in Scots and English, to the late 1800s. A name that sounds like deep Gaelic history turns out to have a short paper trail.

The day itself has no such record either. Nobody has been identified as its author, and no source explains how it began. Newsrooms in Britain and Jamaica have marked it three years running anyway.

Ian Day history

INTRODUCTION

Ian Fleming was born in London on 28 May 1908. His name sat outside the England and Wales top hundred in the snapshots either side of that year, and it had not yet appeared in an American birth file at all.

So the question this record raises is not where the name came from. It is where it has gone since.

CHAPTER 01

The climb through the British registers

The Office for National Statistics publishes its top hundred at ten-year intervals. Ian is absent from the England and Wales list in 1914. It enters at eighty-fifth in the next snapshot, then climbs at each of the four that follow.

Sir Ian McKellen was born in Burnley in 1939, in the middle of that climb. By 1964 the name stands eighth in England and Wales, between Stephen and Robert.

CHAPTER 02

The fall at home

National Records of Scotland publishes every forename registered in Scotland since 1974. That year 421 Scottish boys were recorded as Ian. In 2025 the figure was six.

Ian fell with its whole generation, not on its own. Among the fifty names Scottish parents used most for boys in 1974, the median loss of share since is about ninety-six per cent. Seventeen of those fifty fell further than Ian did.

CHAPTER 03

A name that changed countries

Seven of those fifty names lost more than nine tenths of their Scottish share while gaining ground in American records over the same years. Ian is the only one of the seven still inside the American top hundred.

National Ian Day sits on top of that shift, and nobody appears to have designed it that way. No founder, organisation or campaign has been identified behind the day, and no source explains why it settled on its date. What exists is the practice: the Liverpool Echo, WalesOnline and the Newcastle Chronicle have each marked it.

The name is barred from Atlantic hurricanes

NOAA's National Hurricane Center lists Ian among the retired Atlantic names, struck after 2022. The committee removes a name only when a storm is so deadly or costly that reusing it would be inappropriate.

John has outnumbered Ian every single year

In all 114 years Ian appears in an American birth file, John is ahead of it. The gap is at its narrowest in 2023, and it closed because John fell faster than Ian, not because Ian rose.

Ian's first American year was a record-keeping event

Six boys were recorded as Ian in 1912, the year the Social Security files jumped by more than half, their largest single-year expansion. Some 492 male names first appear that year, against 137 the year before.

The Gaelic spelling reached America 41 years late

Iain does not appear in an American birth file until 1953, four decades after Ian. It has never once outnumbered Ian in the same year.

Ian is a top-20 name in Argentina

Behind the Name records Ian last ranked twentieth in Argentina, in 2020. It also lists it thirty-second in the Basque Country in 2024.
