Ritchie Valens's single Donna reached number two twenty days after he died in a plane crash. July 15 salutes the 831,641 American girls given the name since 1880.
The day's creation is undocumented. Verified observance consists of dated posts by name-bearers and a regional newsroom, with the establishing act and the reason for the date both unlocated.
National Donna Day lands on a name that spiked once, hard, and has been giving it back ever since. Eight of the ten most popular American girls' names fell in 1959. Donna went the other way, up 35.3% in a single year.
The baby boom was not doing the work. The whole female cohort in the Social Security files rose 0.6% that year. Fashion was not doing it either, because the names ranked around Donna were sliding while she climbed.
Two explanations have trailed the name ever since. The birth record rules one of them out.
Donna was an ordinary word for centuries before it was an American name. Italian uses donna for lady, from the Latin domina, mistress of the house.
English took it more than once. It came first inside a courtesy title in the 1580s: madonna, from the Old Italian ma donna, my lady. By the 1660s donna stood on its own here, a noun meaning a lady.
In 1782 the language borrowed the word a third time, out of opera. A prima donna was the first lady of a company, its principal female singer. The meaning most people reach for now, a temperamental person, attached itself only in 1834.
As a given name in America the ascent took its time. Donna first cleared the top 100 for girls. The year was 1926.
Seven years later it had climbed inside the top 25. Then it settled in and stayed. The name held a place in the American top 20 for twenty-seven consecutive years, a run the reference works record without ever explaining it.
Ritchie Valens recorded Donna as the A-side of a single, with La Bamba on the flip. By the middle of December 1958 it was climbing fast. The Billboard chart had it at number 33 that week.
Valens died in a plane crash after a show at Clear Lake, Iowa, on 3 February 1959. Twenty days later the song reached number two, held off the top by Lloyd Price's Stagger Lee.
The observance is the least documented thing on this page. Who first fixed Donna to 15 July, and why, sits outside the written record. What is visible is how the day moves now, from listing sites to the people who carry the name.
WHY THIS DAY MATTERS
More than a third of American Donnas were born in eleven years.
Of every American girl the Social Security files record as Donna, 306,710 were born between 1955 and 1965. That is more than a third of the entire run, so a greeting aimed at Donnas is aimed mostly at one generation.
Donna Strickland was born in May 1959, the year the name crested in America, though her birthplace was Guelph, Ontario rather than anywhere in the United States. She went on to share the Nobel Prize in Physics, only the third woman ever to win it and the first since Maria Goeppert Mayer.
The Meertens Instituut's Dutch name register counted 2,181 women in the Netherlands carrying Donna as a first name when it was drawn from the population register in 2018. Its entry notes the name reached the country largely through bearers born in Great Britain, the United States and the Netherlands Antilles.

The sitcom ran on ABC from September 1958 to March 1966 and was one of television's top 25 shows in 1963-1964. Births named Donna fell in every year of that run after 1959, ending the final season 53.3% below the peak.
La Bamba was the hit side of the Ritchie Valens single.
Billboard stopped La Bamba at number 22, well short of the side that carried the name. Writing for the Library of Congress, Larry Lehmer records that it was the flip side to Donna, added to the single only after the producer talked Valens into cutting it.
