A pet capybara's birthday became an animal's day.

The day began as Caplin Day, started in 2011 by Melanie Typaldos to honor her internet-famous pet capybara Caplin Rous on his July 10 birthday, months after his death. It later spread under the names Capybara Appreciation Day and National Capybara Day.

National Capybara Day does not belong to the species. It belongs to one animal. The date is the birthday of a single pet capybara named Caplin Rous, who arrived at his owner's Texas home weighing three pounds at eleven days old and grew past a hundred.

Caplin was famous before most people had heard the word capybara. He had a blog, a swimming pool, and a national television segment. When he died, his owner did something unusual with the grief. She picked his birthday, not the day he died, and made it a day for his whole kind.

That is the quiet trick of July 10. The internet now treats the capybara as the calm giant of the animal kingdom, a species with millions of fans. The day that honors it started much smaller, in one backyard, around one animal someone loved. How a single pet's birthday became a date for its whole kind is the story underneath the memes.

Capybara Day history

INTRODUCTION

Caplin Rous was not a wild animal. He was a house pet in Buda, Texas, and the idea started a continent away, in the wetlands of Venezuela.

His owner, Melanie Typaldos, traveled to the Los Llanos grasslands and was handed a wild capybara to hold. The encounter stayed with her. Back in Texas, she found a breeder and brought Caplin home as an eleven-day-old.

CHAPTER 01

An internet capybara before the trend

Caplin lived a documented life. Typaldos kept a blog written in his voice, built him a large backyard pool, and taught him tricks. He learned to swim underwater with a grace she described in a 2009 interview, and she had a favorite detail about his moods. "When he's happy he sounds like a Geiger counter," she said.

Television noticed. National coverage in 2010 introduced viewers to a house pet that behaved like a dog but tipped the scales like a person, and Caplin's audience grew with it.

CHAPTER 02

A birthday chosen over a death

Caplin died in January 2011, at three and a half, from liver damage that may have traced back to a reaction to anesthesia. No one could say for sure. Typaldos turned that uncertainty into a mission, founding a memorial fund at Texas A&M's veterinary college in his name.

She also kept his birthday. The first Caplin Day fell on July 10, 2011, and she framed it plainly: a day to mark his life, not his death. The name later widened to Capybara Appreciation Day and National Capybara Day as the date outgrew the one animal it began with.

Grief over one pet became research for a whole species.

Few veterinarians have ever treated a capybara, so basic health data barely existed. The memorial fund tied to the day will even cover shipping a deceased animal from across the US and Canada so its pathology can be studied.

A much bigger relative once existed. The extinct Josephoartigasia monesi weighed an estimated 480 to 500 kg, making today's capybara the heavyweight only among the living.

There are actually two capybara species

Alongside the familiar greater capybara is the smaller lesser capybara, which weighs about 28 kg and ranges from Panama into northwestern South America.

Captivity roughly doubles its lifespan

In the wild a capybara lives about six years on average, but a well-kept one can reach around twelve, which is why a single famous pet could build a years-long following.
